Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a Single-Screw and a Twin-Screw Extruder for snack production?
While single-screw extruders are cheaper and suitable for simple pasta or basic snacks, HSYL recommends Twin-Screw Extruders for most modern snack production. Twin-screw machines offer better mixing capability, self-cleaning functions, and can handle a wider variety of raw materials (including high-moisture and high-oil formulations), allowing you to produce a more diverse range of puff snacks with finer textures.
Can one production line make different shapes of snacks (e.g., balls, rings, stars)?
Yes, the versatility of our extrusion lines allows for easy shape changes. By simply changing the die (mold) at the head of the extruder and adjusting the cutter speed, you can produce various shapes like balls, rings, tubes, stars, and flowers using the same basic processing line.
How does the flavoring system ensure consistent seasoning on every snack?
Our lines utilize a continuous double-drum seasoning system. The first drum applies a thin layer of oil (or slurry) to help adhesion, while the second drum applies the powder seasoning. The rotary motion, combined with adjustable spray nozzles and powder feeders, ensures that even irregular shapes (like twisties or chips) are coated 360 degrees without bare spots or clumping.
What is the difference between Fried and Baked (Non-Fried) puff snacks?
The core extrusion process is similar, but the finishing equipment differs. Fried snacks go through a continuous fryer to achieve a crispy, oily texture (like cheese curls). Baked snacks pass through a multi-layer hot air dryer to remove moisture, resulting in a healthier, lower-fat product. We can configure the line for either method depending on your market positioning.
How does your frying machinery control the oil content in the final product?
To prevent snacks from becoming greasy, our continuous frying lines are equipped with an automatic de-oiling system. Depending on the product, we use either a centrifugal de-oiler (spinning off excess oil) or a high-pressure air knife system immediately after frying. This controls the residual oil level, keeping the snack crispy rather than oily.
Can your machines process multigrain or healthy snack recipes?
Yes. Modern consumer trends favor healthy snacking. HSYL extruders are capable of processing complex grain blends, including corn meal, rice flour, wheat, oats, and even protein-rich pulses like pea flour. We can adjust the screw configuration to handle these different densities and viscosities effectively.
How do you prevent the oil from degrading in the continuous fryer?
Our fryers are equipped with an Oil Circulation and Filtration System. This system continuously cycles the oil through a filter to remove carbonized particles and crumbs that cause bad flavors and rapid oxidation. This not only extends the life of your cooking oil but also ensures the snacks have a clean, fresh taste and golden color.
What packaging solution do you recommend for crispy snacks to ensure long shelf life?
Oxidation and moisture are the enemies of crispy snacks. We recommend a Vertical Form Fill Seal (VFFS) machine equipped with a Nitrogen Flushing device. By replacing the oxygen inside the bag with inert nitrogen gas before sealing, you prevent the oil in the snacks from going rancid and protect the product from being crushed during transport.
What is the typical capacity range of your snack food lines?
HSYL offers scalable solutions. Our entry-level lines start at approximately 100-150kg/hr, suitable for startups. For established manufacturers, we provide industrial-scale lines capable of 200kg/hr up to 500kg/hr or more, with fully automated conveying systems to reduce manual handling.
Do I need a separate crushing machine for raw materials?
If you purchase pre-ground corn meal or flour, you do not need one. However, if you plan to buy whole grains (like corn kernels or rice) to lower raw material costs, we can integrate a High-Efficiency Grinder (Hammer Mill) and a Mixer into the beginning of the line to prepare your own fresh flour blend.
