A crate washer label-removal trial should use the label and adhesive found in the factory's actual return stream. A fresh paper label applied for a demonstration may behave differently from a label exposed to storage, moisture, food residues and repeated handling.
Begin the crate washer review with a label inventory. If the supplier has not confirmed label removal as part of the offered duty, treat it as an open requirement rather than an included capability.
Identify more than the label face
Record the label supplier reference, face material, adhesive and substrate. Include any overprinting, protective film or overlapping labels. Describe how long labels remain attached and the conditions to which returned crates are exposed.
- Label identity. Supplier and material reference.
- Crate surface. Material, texture and condition.
- Use history. Age, moisture and storage exposure.
- Soil combination. Food residues around or over the label.

Separate detachment from residue removal
A label may detach while leaving an adhesive film. Conversely, softened fragments can remain around ribs or collect in another area of the machine. Define whether acceptance concerns visible label material, tacky residue, surface condition or a combination of these findings.
Use an inspection method agreed with the hygiene team. Do not infer microbiological suitability from a visually improved label area.
Follow the removed material
Observe where detached labels and fragments go during a representative run. Record any effect on screens, strainers, drains and cleaning work. A result for one crate is incomplete if the removed material creates repeated interruptions as the batch continues.
The crate washing operating-cost comparison should include presorting, label treatment and disposal work where these remain necessary. Describe separately any change to the label purchasing specification, since changing consumables is a different intervention from changing washer equipment.
Keep any chemistry change controlled
Cleaning products and operating conditions must be compatible with the crate and washer and approved for the factory's application. Obtain supplier and hygiene review before changing them. This article does not supply a universal chemical recipe, temperature or contact time for removing adhesives.
Retain the actual label references and representative samples with the trial report. Repeat the relevant assessment when the label, adhesive or crate surface changes materially.
